Media serve(s) a vital function in human society no matter what political system it is functioning under. Journalists, including everyone contributing to the media, perform a noble duty to report truth and maintain justice for mankind. However, today’s media industry and some media professionals are corrupted and become a tool of the ruling elites whether they control a single party or multiple party political system or government. The controlling elites possess wealth and power far more than the mass. Around the world, say 193 member countries in the United Nation, they strive for economic development, but unfortunately, all face a common problem - the huge wealth gap in society. Putting it simply, the 20:80 phenomenon occurs because that twenty percent or less of the population posses 80 percent or more of the wealth, thus creating a 20:80 division in the society where the 20% elites are the ruling class. Fortunately, this 20:80 phenomenon has become more observable and understandable by the masses both in capitalist or socialist societies begging for changes.
The Mainstream Media are generally controlled by the elites (20%), however, with advancement of internet technology, Organic Media appealing to the mass (80%) has sprouted. One often can find publications in the Organic Media dealing with an important topic normally discussed in the Mainstream Media but appeared to reach the ‘innocent’ masses. I found one such publication integrating the news in the mainstream, presenting with in-depth analysis and aiming to sound an alarm about the 20:80 problem and a concern about the future of human society, namely the aspiration of young people for their future. This article, written anonymously in Chinese and entitled, “范冰冰事件暴露出美囯对华计划,令人胆战心惊!”, has appeared in Xila.com and other websites. The tax evasion by the famous actress Fan Bingbing, is a current news widely reported but this article links the news to a big topic, Culture War, a strategy of the elites to control the world. The article specifically refers to Zbigniew Brzezinski, a political strategist who, served as the national security advice under President Carter, had written books about how to maintain the leadership position of the U.S. through a non-military strategy which I would characterize it as ‘Culture War’ or in his words: How to Win in World Competition. In this column, I shall use the above Organic media article to extend the discussion on the big topic which it alluded to - from culture war to the future of mankind.
First, the background of the above article can be summarized briefly as: 1. Tax evasion of Fan Bingbing (hundreds of million dollars) is the result of greed prevailing in the movie industry, originated from Hollywood, hiding income with devious means to avoid taxes. 2. Hollywood is the key component of the ‘Soft Power’ of the U.S. to influence and control the world consistent with Brzezenski’s thesis of winning competition. 3. Specific means of providing the masses with A. Entertainment that dissipates people’s energy (examples, sex, games, gossip talk shows etc.) and B. Media Games that satisfy people’s mental void (examples, soup opera, talent shows, idol worship, etc.). The article highlights Brzezinski’s books such as America World (2008) and Grand Chess Board (1997) and placing Brzezinski’s ‘winning competition’ as an evil strategy. These arguments are probably more substantiated by facts observable today on media power than supported by his intent long before writing his books. However, the above two flags raised by the Organic Media attributing “tittytainment” as the weapon of ‘soft power’ and ‘culture war’ initiated by the media industry do have their own merits; the media industry has been globalized and its world-wide influence and financial control certainly belong to the 20% elites of the world.
The masses of the world do seem to lose interest in serious thinking in political ideology and life aspirations giving in to trivia entertainment. Gossip news filled the media and Internet amplified them. Young people are lost substituting media stars as their life advisor rather than studying learned philosophers. To these points, the article presented the following observations: 1. People lost thinking ability, 2. Rigid new classes formed by 20:80 and attributed to the ‘soft power’ and ‘culture war’. Money is used to buy and generate elites (recruiting and scholarship to elite students). American values and brainwash are delivered through media. Providing financial support to opposition even enemy’s enemy to topple a government. Buy and corrupt government and military power to achieve regime change. Again, these charges can be substantiated with facts despite the control of mainstream media, however, the prevention of the above or reversing the tide is possible.
For a culture war, there can be a culture defense even a culture revival. When there is an invasive ‘soft power’, there can be a defensive ‘soft power’ even a counter soft power. China seems to be seriously concerned with the above issues initiating policies to deal with the ‘soft power invasion’. Long before Fan Bingbing’s case being a hot news item, one can see that China has exerted as much counter effort to deal with the ‘West soft power invasion’. China allocated significant funds to support the Chinese culture media productions from movies, culture shows on traditional Chinese poetry, arts and music. China sponsored a global television network to cover the neglected news from Africa, Asia and Latin America. China especially focuses on motivational media production highlighting not only heroes of the past but also the great achievers of the modern time, scientists, inventors and engineers who have contributed to the advances of modern China in fields of architecture, bridge building, dams for generating electricity, high-speed rails, jumbo planes and various technological advances from satellite positioning, space shuttle and exploration, agricultural to Chinese and western medical sciences.
The above Organic Media article most likely will not get as many eyeballs as the Fan Bingbing’s gossip news. As a person dedicated his retirement life to media work, I hope to do my best to reach out to the masses in the world with facts and truth.
